Meet the BOSU...Your Bod’s New Best Bud! Written By: Brenda Booth, NASM-CPT, Owner, Body One Wellness, LLC
Variety is the spice of life; and nowhere is that more true than with your workout. A great way to add variety, as well as achieve better balance, utilize more energy and strengthen the core, is with the BOSU®. You’ve seen it--that strange half ball that brave others test their skill with. But no, not you. You safely watch from behind the cardio equipment. You ponder…what does the device actually do and could I use it?
Well you're about to meet your bod’s new best bud and see how easy it is to reshape your body and shake up your current workout. BOSU® Training can be physically demanding, but when done properly, it is appropriate to a variety of fitness levels. So you can do it!
Once you step on it and just stand, your body begins to find the path of least resistance, strengthening your core and burning additional calories at the same time. I tell my clients that anytime you can be on an unstable surface when training the better.
There are so many exercises to try; it’s not just for sit-ups. When you progress, you can try your luck at some squats with weights on the flat side. The best part is you work at your own pace and add variety at the same time. The exercise could be as simple as standing bicep curls--adding that extra burn while strengthening the entire core.
Your improved balance from this training will help you in every aspect of life, no matter what your fitness level. Plus, it can be a ton of fun. So make friends with the funny half ball, and include it in your routine.
